The fairies are slender beings with pointed ears and large, black eyes. According to their own lore, they were the dominant race in Shiyan before the cataclysm, and somehow directly caused the event. Legends have it that these ancient forbears were demigods, near immortal, and able to travel freely to the heavens and hells. Most fairies harbor feelings of guilt or inadequacy, depending on how much they believe these stories. Fairies have a reputation for being beautiful and mischievous.

The fairies on the mainland form the Rabbit nation, and rabbit and fairy synonyms in many dialects. Rabbit culture is tribal, and each tribe has distinctive facial tattoos. Fairies are mistrusted by other species, exacerbated by their insular nature. Their tattoos are meant in part to make them less attractive to other species, but mostly to keep them identifying with the tribe above all else. The Rabbit nation has no borders, and exists as various minority communities who travel the rivers and camp in the forests. The exception is the Boar nation, where the fairies are an elite noble class by right of birth. In what may be a coincidence the Boars brand their worst criminals with facial tattoos, a sign of dishonor that removes them from the noble class. The Boars believe the mainland once belonged to them, and use the scattered tribes of fairies as an excuse to launch occasional 'rescue' missions of conquest. In truth the mainland fairies have little use for these invaders, and consider them more oppressive than the humans and others who surround them.

For most fairies, the tribe is everything, and the heart of the tribe is ancient customs. Anything modern or technological is shunned and mistrusted. Marriages are carefully brokered and arranged between tribes. Loving someone outside these arranged marriages is forbidden, and loving someone from another species is especially offensive. Fairies who break the tribe's rules and traditions often enough may be banished to make their way among the outsiders. Since the fairies walk the same paths as the Valiant Societies most tribes will welcome disciples as guests (for a time) and expect similar courtesies when visiting martial strongholds. Greater numbers of fairy youth are enlisting as scouts for the Imperial Banners, much to the concern of the tribal elders.
