It would be immodest to say too much about humans. The other species judge us for what we lack; our eyes and ears are not particularly keen, our fingers and teeth are not sharp and dangerous, our bodies are not shelled or scaled. But what we have in excess is spirit and potential. The gods made us like empty cups, filled with learning and practice rather than with claws and horns. And so we dominate Shiyan, and the others envy us despite our so-called shortcomings, or blame us for the ancient cataclysm which was surely caused by our hubris.
Though most people in Shiyan are human, we do not rule everywhere. The Dog nation is split between the devils and the direclaws, Horse is ruled by the fours, and Boar has ever been the realm of vicious fairies. In all those lands but Boar the Emperor's Word is law, and it is no accident that the emperor is human. We lead and leave order in our wake, whether by the sword or by the brush. Our weakness is we are always reaching out for more, because an empty cup longs to be filled.
Some humans are so eager for more than even dying does not sate them. Such spirits become ravenous ghosts rather than submit to reincarnation. Even a body may not be satisfied with its circumstances and become restless. These phenomenon aren't limited to humans, but admittedly most undead were once humans. Once the heavens and hells kept this in check, but after the cataclysm we had to police the undead ourselves.
Recommended Faults
- Ambitious: You want to win at any cost. You may only Distinctions from one category.
"Get out of my way!"
Will: Lose a Turn gloating over a defeated rival.
Will: Lose Reputation from cheating or taking shortcuts to success.
- Conniving: You are untrustworthy. Take a -1 penalty on all Charm checks.
"Trust me."
Will: A foe sees through your lie because you just can't keep the twinkle out of your eye.
Will: Betray someone who trusted you.
- Greedy: You are obsessed with accumulating material wealth. You may not have relationship as assets.
"She's rich...."
Will: Accept payment to do something the rest of the party refuses to do.
Will: Keep Treasure without sharing with anyone.
