Sparks are mobile automatons that have somehow gained self-awareness and a soul. They are are intricate machines, made with precision and magic. Most such machines were constructed before the cataclysm, and have been rebuilt or re purposed hundreds of times since then. A very few masters still possess the art to create new machines. Almost all sparks are humanoid, built as servile dolls or devastating mockeries. As constructs they mimic intelligence or follow intricate programming, but once they spark they become something else. Sparking is a singular event, and once it happens the machine has a soul and free will. No philosopher has discovered where this soul comes from, or what caused it to be. Likewise the machine isn't haunted, as no exorcist has yet managed to banish the soul from spark.
Any machine may spark, even models that would seem incapable of thought or speech. Some sparks disguise their nature, and pretend to follow their programming until they reveal themselves by disobeying a directive. A resolute "No," is often the first indication that a machine has awakened. Many generations ago a Dragon ruler invoked the Emperor's Word and decreed that once a spark declares itself, it shall immediately be recognized as an individual by the empire and released from its former duties if it so desires. Not all owners honor this law, and some sparks are unaware of it, and continue to hide their nature and serve.
Freed sparks are seldom successful at attempts to fit in with the rest of society. They generally look just enough like humans to be disturbing. Their lack of body language and breathing sets the living slightly on edge, though they can seldom tell why. They stand in uncomfortable but artistic poses, and they never blink. But despite their differences physical differences sparks do feel emotions, and they keenly perceive this discomfort and rejection. Some become hermits, finding serenity in seclusion. Each spark names itself, and all machines consider this chosen name quite auspicious. Those that feel kindly towards former owners often take the family name. The rest name themselves for their purpose, or an arcane model designation that only has meaning to them.
