Foundation Stone Monk
The Foundation Stone monk is an ascetic steeped in magic and the Outsider tradition. A monk may or may not have undergone the rigorous physical training of the monastery, instead emphasizing the more spiritual side of the order. A monk is usually a voice for peace and harmony, battling evil indirectly or if it driven by an external supernatural forces. Men and women can both become monks. Women are sometimes called nuns by laypeople, but within the sect only the terms priest and monk are used.
As a monk, you have a somber responsibility to the community. You have to remain apart from and above the petty desires that propel normal mortals towards evil and tragedy, the force the Outsider called "drama". Not that you don't feel those desires yourself, you just have better training at denying them. There are two main philosophies among the priests. "Shining stars" try to be above drama and sin, and live as examples of sect's creed. On the other hand the "muddy shoes" are more worldly and approachable. Shining stars tend to be arrogant and fall hard if they fail to live up to their own ideals. Muddy shoes are often gregarious and a little too accommodating, making it difficult to distinguish if they are making allowances or simply corrupt.
- Caretaker. Many monks live simple lives maintaining a temple or shrine. Most people think of you as compassionate or shy, if they think of you at all. That changes if your charge is threatened. You are also the most likely candidate to carry artifacts to or from holy sites.
- Exorcist. Burial rituals have always been essential in dealing with ghosts and the undead, and you are a priest specializing in proper funerals and cleaning up after situations where those rituals were ignored. Order Magic and a proper license as Ordained Clergy are essential, however getting along with the living is optional, so many exorcists end up bitter or solitary.
- Preacher. You are on a mission to carry the message of the Outsider to the poor and suffering. You must walk a difficult line between easing that suffering and teaching people how to overcome it themselves through acceptance, faith, and generosity.
